An Experience of Silence

As luck would have it, the copy of John Cage’s Silence that I had ordered online arrived right on World Book Day—April 23, 2021. At first glance, the book’s physical proportions, internal layout, and the deliberate use of varying font sizes and styles immediately evoked a sense of musical resonance and deep artistic reflection. The overall essence of the book clearly carries the profound influence of Zen philosophy and the I Ching. From a design standpoint, every chapter and every single page feels entirely unique.

This particular volume, compiling John Cage’s lectures and writings, is the 50th Anniversary Edition. Published by the Wesleyan University Press in Middletown, Connecticut, and featuring a foreword by Kyle Gann, this book stands as a monumental masterpiece in the world of global art and music.

You cannot simply read this book cover-to-cover. It has no definitive beginning and no end; you can open it to any page that catches your fancy and immerse yourself in its essence. Most importantly, whether viewed through the lens of modernism, postmodernism, traditional Indian art, or contemporary global art, the book approaches every perspective with grace and generosity. Carrying the ultimate truth of all philosophies, it beautifully emphasizes the profound weight of silence.

Rather than dissecting it literally or reading it page-by-page in a conventional sense, the true joy lies simply in experiencing it. It feels like wandering through a dense forest or a sprawling flower garden; it envelops you completely, leaving a holistic impact on your mind, body, and soul. This is a book that provides immense inspiration to perceive the density of timelessness and infinite emptiness. Resisting rigid rules and doctrines, it remains deeply sensitive to endless possibilities.

Personally, I feel this book has contributed immensely to deepening my appreciation for the traditional arts of Odisha, pushing me to contemplate how those ancient, well-ordered principles can be reimagined within the vast possibilities of contemporary art. I believe that tethering oneself solely to current trends can be a limitation. True, expansive contemporary awareness remains intact only when we look beyond our immediate era and allow the timeless, traditional arts—which have flowed since time immemorial—to resonate within us once again.
